These free shapes activities help kids learn about 2D and 3D shapes with straight sides. Kids can use their fine motor skills to construct the shapes out of popsicle sticks or craft matchsticks. The construction activities make a wonderful addition to math centers. Suitable for kids in preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade.

Constructing 2D Shapes Activities

The following construction activities are suitable for kids in preschool and kindergarten who are learning about 2D shapes.

Preparation – Print and laminate the task cards for added durability. Cut along the dotted lines to separate the cards. After that you can also attach the storage label to a zip lock bag or container. Next grab some popsicle sticks or craft matchsticks and pop them in a basket.

How to Play – Choose a task card and count the number of sides. Then collect that amount of sticks and construct the 2D shape!

Extension Activity – Once the kids have constructed a 2D shape they can complete the recording worksheet. This worksheet is designed to record the properties of each shape such as the number of corners and sides.

Constructing 3D Shapes Activities

The construction activities shown below are great for kids in first grade and second grade who are learning about the properties of 3D shapes..

Preparation – Grab the task cards that you prepared previously. You’ll also need some craft matchsticks, playdough or sticky tac to join the shapes. As a special treat, kids could use mini marshmallows but be sure to check for allergies first. I tend to avoid using food materials as I err on the side of caution!

How to Play – Choose a task card, count the number of sides and then get that amount of matchsticks. Begin by constructing the base of the 3D shape and then gradually work your way up. I found playdough to be a bit fiddly at times. Sticky tac is a more sturdy material to use.

Extension Activity – After the kids have constructed a 3D shape they can complete the recording worksheet to show how many sides, corners and faces each shape has.

Constructing Shapes Activities

These shapes activities are a fun addition to math centers. I love that they use everyday materials such as popsicle sticks and craft matchsticks, which are usually floating about in most classrooms!
