Ninja Sight Word Activities

These ninja sight words activities are an engaging way to teach kids high frequency words! They make a fun addition to literacy centers in kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade.

Ninja Sight Word Activities

The following literacy center activities help kids learn Dolch Pre-Primer, Primer, First Grade, Second Grade and Third Grade sight words. I’ve also included some editable sight word labels which can be used with other high frequency word lists.

Literacy Center 1 – Magnetic Letter Work Mats (Word Cards)

Preparation – Start by printing and laminating the activities for added durability. I recommend printing each set of sight words on a different color, so that they’re easy to keep track of. Next, grab a cookie tray, magnetic letters and an erasable marker.

How to Play – First choose a sight word and place it near the ninja on the box. After that read the sight word and build it with magnetic letters. Lastly write the sight word with an erasable marker. Continue playing by wiping the mat clean and choosing a new sight word.

I’ve also included an optional recording sheet. So the kids can write the sight words they’ve picked on there too.

Literacy Center 2 – Magnetic Letter Work Mats (Ping Pong Balls)

These ninja activities are similar to the first literacy center, except rather than use word labels you can use ping pong balls.

Preparation – Start by writing some focus sight words on a set of ping pong balls. I used a fine tip marker to do this, but just keep in mind once you’ve written a sight word on the ping pong ball it is very hard to rub off. So prepare to be committed to using your ping pong balls for sight word activities! Alternatively, you could write the sight word on a piece of masking tape and add it to the ping pong ball instead.

Tip – If you’re wondering where I found my neon ping pong balls, I searched for them online and bought them from eBay.

How to Play – This literacy center is played in the same way as the first one. Except you start by putting a sight word ping pong ball on the mat instead of the word card. Then the kids need to build the word with magnetic letters and write it with an erasable marker.

Literacy Center 1 – Ninja Sight Words Mats (Editable Board Games)

This is one of my favorite activities!

Preparation– Print and laminate the editable sight word board games. Next grab some counters and a dice. Finally, make the ninja wood for the kids to chop. To make this I glued the printable on some recycled cardboard.

How to Play – First roll the dice and then move that number of places. Then say the sight word. If you get it right you get to chop the wood like a ninja. Say the sight word and then “yah” while chopping the pretend wood in half. Kids can also record the words on the recording worksheet that is included.
