Rhyming Activities

Pin

These rhyming activities help kids to detect words that rhyme and produce words that rhyme.

The ability to rhyme is an important phonological awareness skill.

Kids begin by identifying words that rhyme, for example “What rhymes with cat? Mop or bat?”. Later on they learn to generate rhyming words. For example, “What is a word that rhymes with key?” – bee, tree…

The following worksheet activities come in a variety of levels to make differentiation easy!

Detecting Rhyming Words

Rhyme Detection – This activity is great for beginners. Support kids by looking at each set of pictures and saying something like “What rhymes with rose? Rose, sheep or rose, hose? Level 1 is the easiest as there are only two answer options.

Rhyme Detection – Level 2 is a bit more challenging. It requires kids to identify the three pictures that rhyme and cross out the one that doesn’t rhyme.

Generating Rhyming Words

Rhyme Generation – This activity encourages kids to produce rhyming words. Say something like “Think of a word that rhymes with ram, ham…”. If a child gets stuck you can use the clue to prompt them to think of a rhyming word. For example, “Think of a word that rhymes with ram, ham, j…”. Saying the initial sound of a rhyming word often prompts kids to jump in with whole word “jam”. The clues suggest rhyming words that are simple to draw.
