Penguin Patterning Mats

Pin

These penguin patterning mats help kids learn how to make patterns. They’re a fun addition to Pre-K, Preschool or Kindergarten math centers.

Penguin Patterning Activities

This hands on activity is an awesome way to get kids thinking about common patterns such as ABAB, ABC, AABB, AAB and ABB.

Work Mats

Preparation –  Begin by printing and laminating the patterning mats for added durability. Next, cut along the dotted lines to separate the mats. After that put some red, blue, green and yellow counters into a basket. I love using pom poms with this activity.

How To Play – First give an example of a pattern such as “blue, yellow, red, blue, yellow, red”. Then, say to the kids “I wonder what color comes next. What do you think?”. After that they need to continue the pattern with their counters.

Worksheets

Preparation – Begin by grabbing some dot markers, bingo daubers, dot stickers, paint or colored pencils.

How To Play – First have a chat about how a pattern is made. Then show the kids an example such as red, yellow, red, yellow with the counters. After that the kids can create their own pattern using dot markers or another craft tool.

Tip: Clipping pom poms onto pegs and then dipping them in a tray of paint is a fun way to do this activity.
