Butterfly Fine Motor Activities
These fun butterfly activities help kids to develop their fine motor skills. They make a perfect addition to spring centers! Suitable for kids in preschool and kindergarten.
Butterfly Pom Pom Mats
These mats are great for kids who are learning to match colors or… for those kids who love picking objects up with fancy equipment like tweezers or tongs!
Preparation – Print and laminate the mats for added durability. Then grab a basket and fill it with a variety of rainbow colored pom poms (red, green, orange, blue, purple and yellow). After that grab some big tweezers or tongs. Children’s chopsticks can be fun too!
How to Play – Pick up a pom pom and match it to the circle with that color on the mat. Continue playing until all of the circles are filled.
Butterfly Pencil Control Activities
This activity comes in both a work mat and worksheet. So pick the one you’d prefer to use the most.
Preparation – If you’re using the work mat, laminate it for added durability. Alternatively, you can pop it into a clear sleeve or dry erase pocket sleeve. I purchased mine only from eBay, but some people have also reported seeing them in discount stores.
How to Play – Kids trace the lines left by the butterflies with an erasable marker. If doing the worksheet, kids can trace the lines and then color in the picture. These come in both American and Australian spelling versions.
Butterfly Cutting Practice
This activity is great for kids who are working on their fine motor and scissor skills.
Preparation – For this activity kids will need colored pencils, crayons or markers – depending on their coloring tool preference! They’ll also need some scissors.
How to Play – Kids begin by coloring in the butterfly. Once they have decorated their butterfly they need to cut around the dotted lines with scissors. I always remind the kids to hold the page while they cut (with the hand not holding the scissors). Usually I model how to turn the page as they cut to make it easier too.
