Kids will love creating 2D shapes with these fun playdough mats. They’re a fun addition to preschool or kindergarten math centers.
Ice Cream Playdough Mats
Teaching kids about 2D shapes is so much fun when you add playdough to the mix! The following activity is easy to prep and can be used in a few different ways.
Preparation – Begin by printing and laminating the playdough mats for added durability. There are two mats per page, so you’ll need to cut around the borders to separate the mats. Next grab some playdough and you’re set to go! I usually make the playdough for my class and have tried many recipes over the years. Personally, I find the recipe on the back of the Cream of Tartar container the most effective! If you need a recipe, this one here is fairly similar to the one I use.
How to Play – Start by choosing a card and naming the 2D shape. Then grab some playdough and mold it into the shape on the card. Alternatively, the kids could trace the shape on the card with an erasable marker or use the card as a shape sorting mat.
Once finished, you can further extend the learning by discussing attributes such as the number of corners, whether the shape has curved or straight edges and so on.
