This Beach dramatic play center helps kids engage in pretend play and learn about water safety. The activities are suitable for kids in Pre-K, Preschool and Kindergarten, although I’m sure older children will love it too!
Why is dramatic play important?
Pretend play helps kids to learn about themselves, the world and how things work. Dramatic play centers also help to strengthen a child’s language development (e.g. expressive language, vocabulary), social skills and play skills. Children learn a lot through play!
Beach Dramatic Play
This is such a fun dramatic play center if you’re doing a beach or ocean theme. The kids can pretend to relax at the beach, visit the surf shop, rescue swimmers and more!
Main Area – I created my backdrop out of large plastic party table cloths. I bought mine for a few dollars from a local discount store. Next I made a palm tree out of crepe paper. Finally I added some beach props such as a beach towel, toys and a blue shell sandpit.
Shop – I kept the shop items simple so that the items would be easy to find. The kids can use play money to buy beach toys and sunglasses (I just used party sunglasses). They can also hire a surfboard and pretend to surf. I made mine out of cardboard covered in crepe paper, but painting them would be better for added durability.
Lifeguard Hut – I’ve included lots of water safety printables such as flags and sun safety posters. These are designed to help the kids learn about water safety and the important role that life guards play. For this area you’ll just need a few basic props such as a first aid kit, printable walkie talkies and megaphone. I made a pretend life ring out of red crepe paper.
Other Beach Activities
Kids can also read and relax on a beach towel, play with sand in the sensory bin or sort shells.
I hope the kids enjoy this pack and learn lots about the beach!
