Letter Recognition Activities for Kids

These alphabet activities help kids develop letter recognition and fine motor skills. They’re a fun addition to Pre-K, Preschool and Kindergarten literacy centers.

Alphabet Fine Motor Mats

I love these alphabet mats for teaching kids letter recognition. Each mat features both capital (upper case) and lower case letters. There is also a cute picture starting with the short beginning sound to help kids remember the sound the letter makes.

Preparation – Begin by printing and laminating the mats for added durability. Alternatively, you can put them in a dry erase pocket sleeve. I ordered mine online from eBay. After that you just need to grab some counters in two different colors. I love using transparent counters or pom poms (see the pictures below).

How to Play – First name the letter and say the beginning sound. Then grab a pile of counters in two different colors. Next, cover the capital letters with the first color and the lower case letters with the second color. Continue playing until all of the letters have been covered.

Alphabet Dot a Letter Activities

These alphabet activities can be used on their own as worksheets or you can make them into a workbook. I’ve included cover pages for the workbook option.

Preparation – Start by printing the letters you want the kids to work on. Then grab some dot markers or bingo daubers. Alternatively, you can write the letters on dot stickers. I’ve taken photos of both variations so you can see what they look like (see below). If you’re using the dot stickers, you’ll need ten capital letters and ten lower case letters.

Dot the Letter – Begin by naming the letter and beginning sound. Next, grab two dot markers in different colors. Then dot all the capital letters with the first color and the lower case letters with the second color.

Match the Letter – Start by naming the letter and initial sound. Then, grab the dot stickers with the letters written on them. Next, cover all the capital letters with the first color and the lower case letters with the second color.
