This Road Works dramatic play center helps kids develop STEM skills and engage in pretend play. It’s suitable for kids in Pre-K, Preschool and Kindergarten, although I’m sure older children will love it too!
Importance of Pretend Play
Why is dramatic play important?
Pretend play helps kids to learn about themselves, the world and how things work. Dramatic play centers also help to strengthen a child’s language development (e.g. expressive language, vocabulary), social skills and play skills. Children learn a lot through play!
Road Works Dramatic Play
I love using this Road Works as an extension to the Construction Site dramatic play area. It’s a fun way for kids to learn about road workers whilst playing with construction vehicles and cars.
Preparation – First I laminated all of the printables for added durability. I made a few copies of the road work signs and printable roads. Next I set up a road building area with materials such as cones, blocks, roads, signs and vehicles. Finally I added labels to help build the kid’s vocabulary and literacy skills.
Tip – I taped each sign to a popsicle stick and then stood it inside a cotton reel so it would stand up.
Road Works Printables
The kids can grab a walkie talkie and road worker report to complete as they embark on their road working mission! To make it even more fun, I included some dress ups such as a construction hat, safety glasses and vest too. I found the construction worker costume at Kmart (Australia).
More Road Works Activities
Sensory Bin – I made a small sensory bin from this Kmart play tray (from the kitchen section). If you have a large sandpit, you can place the signs and vehicles there as a provocation (invitation to play).
Outdoor Play – I love adding some of the larger road works signs to outdoor play areas. For example, the kids can use the “Stop” signs at the bike tracks.
You can learn more about this dramatic play pack below. I’ve included a more comprehensive set of instructions within the actual pack.
